Wishaw boss Martin O’Neill wants his young stars to use Stevie McGurgan as a role model after he stepped up to a coaching role at the Beltane.

McGurgan was unveiled by the West of Scotland Second Division club as part of O’Neill’s backroom staff, while he paraded new signings John Barr, Taelor Meharry, Bradley Grey and Craig Sideserf.

And O’Neill said: “The guys who have come in have done really well.

“Stevie has been there for a while, he has been a really good influence on the guys, in terms of training and about the dressing room.

“He has been outstanding as a player and he’s really one the younger ones should be looking at and thinking ‘his commitment, his fitness, looking after himself’ – he has been brilliant off the pitch as well.

“Big John Barr has come in and done really well. It was Craig Sideserf’s first game but he has made a good impact.”

Meanwhile, O’Neill has called for more composure in the final third after losing 2-0 at home to Kilsyth Rangers in a “stuffy” West of Scotland Second Division clash.

He says his side can take positives from the defeat, with them chasing the game until Kilsyth clinched the points with a late second.

But he wants his side to be calmer in front of goal as they bid to claw their way up from 15th place in the 16-team league.

O’Neill said: “We had a few injuries, one of the new signings, Taelor, got injured at training on Wednesday, and we had a couple of boys coming back from injury who hadn’t trained that much, so maybe in hindsight it was a wee step too far.

“Having said that, the second goal was with three or four minutes to go.

“It was a very stuffy game, actually. I can’t really remember our goalkeeper having a save to make, don’t really remember their goalkeeper having a save to make.

“It was just a really stuffy game.

“We had a couple of half-chances without hitting the target, they were probably the same, but in fairness to them they took their chance to make it 1-0 probably 35 minutes in.

“Their second goal was a ricochet in the box, somebody trying to clear it, with a couple of minutes to go and that was game over.

“In general terms there were a couple of wee things that disappointed me about the performance, but they’re not worrying things, they’re things that can be fixed very quickly.

“If you look at the positive side of things, we didn’t play particularly well but we’re still in games, it’s not like there’s a gap between us and the teams that are going to be pushing up the higher end of the table, which I think Kilsyth will be.

“We beat Ardrossan, gave a good account of ourselves against Bonnyton and Largs in the higher division, so it’s not all doom and gloom, that’s for sure.

“There’s loads of positivity, we probably just need a wee bit more composure in the final third, and maybe be a bit more aggressive in the middle area of the pitch.”

Wishaw now travel to Muirkirk on Saturday in the league, kick-off 2pm.
