The top destinations in the UK and Ireland to visit in 2024 have been named, and two Scottish spots are featured on the list.

Luxury travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller revealed its top UK and Ireland travel picks for next year, from bustling city neighbourhoods to picturesque coastal locations, based on suggestions from its "expert contributors".

The two Scottish destinations featured in the prestigious list are the Cairngorms and Edinburgh.

The Cairngorms are a mountain range in the eastern Highlands that are a part of Scotland's second national park, the Cairngorms National Park. The dramatic mountains are the perfect spot to head for a frosty winter walk, offering spectacular views out across the Highlands.

Also known for its rare animal and plant life, the Cairngorms are home to species such as the elusive and endangered Scottish wildcat, as well as golden eagles, ospreys, red squirrels, and many more.

Among the towns and villages within the Cairngorms National Park are Aviemore, Ballater, Braemar, and Boat of Garten. All offer a variety of cosy pubs and charming shops to visit after a day exploring the mountains.

Condé Nast Traveller also recommended the safari tours available around the area, in addition to pony rides and picnics amid the breathtaking scenery.

Condé Nast Traveller contributor Rosie Conroy wrote: "When you’re in it, the great swathes of green that colour in the Cairngorms feel endless. Scotland’s largest national park is a patchwork of mossy enclaves, ancient Caledonian forests and craggy hilltops (including Ben Macdui, the UK’s second-highest mountain)."

Meanwhile, the magazine singled out Edinburgh for its bustling St James Quarter shopping centre, its unique architecture, and for being a "hub of art and hospitality". Condé Nast Traveller also noted the capital's whisky heritage, making it a perfect destination for those who enjoy a dram or two.

As well as being crowned the city in the UK with the "highest quality of life" earlier this year, Edinburgh is also known for its countless hidden gems to discover and fascinating history.
