The "prettiest and ugliest" towns across the UK have been named - and three Scottish destinations are included in the list. Earlier this week, The Telegraph published an article detailing the most and least attractive locations across Britain.

Travel experts at the newspaper ranked towns on the pleasantness of their shop fronts, their historic architecture, the level of traffic and litter, viewpoints, and greenery, before assigning them an overall score out of 50.

In terms of the prettiest towns in the UK, two Scottish destinations appeared in the top 14 - with South Queensferry and St Andrews placing at number two and four, respectively.

South Queensferry in West Lothian scored 45 out of 50 in total, receiving a perfect 10-out-of-10 score for scenery thanks to its stunning views of the Forth Bridges. Elsewhere, the town scored nine out of 10 for historic architecture, shop fronts, and greenery, and eight out of 10 for traffic and litter.

The Telegraph singled out South Queensferry's "elegant and deeply historic High Street", independent shops, and beaches — as well as its plethora of scenic walking and cycling trails.

Meanwhile, the seaside town of St Andrews on Scotland’s east coast received an overall score of 44 out of 50. The coastal spot scored a perfect 10 out of 10 for historic architecture, while it scored nine out of 10 for views, shop fronts, and greenery, and seven out of 10 for traffic and litter.

Praising its "grace and beauty", The Telegraph recommended West Sands, St Andrews Cathedral, and St Andrews Castle as particular highlights. Also singled out were St Andrews' streets, which are home to everything from independent shops to charming tearooms.

On the other hand, the Lanarkshire town of Cumbernauld was named as the ugliest town in Scotland by the experts at The Telegraph, with an overall score of just 20 out of 50.

Dating back to the 1950s, when it was created as a population overspill for Glasgow, Cumbernauld received scores of five out of 10 for greenery, traffic and litter, four out of 10 for shop fronts, and three out of 10 for historic architecture and views.
