Peter Wright is out of the spotlight.

So far, in fact, he could
be deep inside the 40-foot polytunnel greenhouse he’s been building to grow fruit and veg on his Suffolk farm.

Wright’s own growth in darts is complete – he’s the champion of the world.

Seeing a lifetime of graft and sacrifice bear fruit at the Alexandra Palace four-and-a-half months ago, he should be enjoying his victory lap.

Instead he’s out of sight, having lived in lockdown for the past two months.

Wright is Scotland’s hidden World Champion.

The 50-year-old could be bitter but that isn’t him. Snakebite may be the brash on-stage character but the real Wright is humble.

Rather than carrying
the Sid Waddell Trophy from one packed venue to another, he’s carrying eggs laid by his chickens for delivery to the local elderly along with wife Jo.

Wright said: “It’s all fine and I’m keeping busy. There’s plenty to be doing and I’m building a polytunnel.

“It’s 42 foot by 20 foot so it’s not a little one. They say you can actually put it up in two days but it has been a bit of an on and off project. The weather has been a bit windy and it has rained, so that has held it up. But there’s going to be everything in there – tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, peppers.

“Jo keeps me busy. She’s been asking me to make things for her chickens. I put a bench together, sanded it down and painted it – like a little garden seat to feed them.

“I’ll give anything a go. It might not be great but I’ll try.”

That attitude took him to the top of the world.

Even when he was mocked for being all haircut and coloured trousers, the West Lothian-born star kept faith.

Now he’s bagged the World Cup with Gary Anderson for Scotland plus the big one.

Wright said: “Before the lockdown it was really busy.

“There were many things to do and many interviews
as well as the tournaments – it was hectic. But I said to myself, ‘Is it not what you wanted?’ And of course it was.

“If you want to be World Champion that’s what comes with it, so you want to do it.

“I said I was ready for it and that’s why I went and won it.

“I would have been at various events and near enough everything. Looking at the plans for the months, it was Premier League night, up the next day for an exhibition then a European. Travel five, six hours and back for the next Premier League to do it all again. It’s quite surreal in one sense.

“At the beginning of the year Jo and I had spoken about it being nice to maybe get six months off to recharge the batteries. It looks like that wish is coming true. We just didn’t want it to be in these circumstances.

“As well as recharging those batteries, though, it can also offer a new focus and hunger for playing the game.

“It makes me want to carry on and get better
and better – to try to break more records. I believe I can perform better.

“When I won the World Championship I didn’t feel
all that well throughout the tournament, so that’s why you wish to improve.” Wright reckons he threw all of nine darts in the whole of last week but he’ll be back soon.

The PDC hope to stage the World Matchplay in July even if an empty Winter Gardens in Blackpool will be odd.

Wright laughed and said: “Whoever is working, like the security boys or the staff, you could attach a few dummies to them. That way when they stand up, six people will stand and it’ll look like a crowd.

“Get cardboard cutouts.”

That’s Wright – always smiling. He added: “People’s wellbeing is more important than me throwing a few darts. And anyway, I’ll get the chance to do it all [World Champion lap] next year, don’t worry.”
