It was a massive night in the French capital for Gregor Townsend and his men as they looked to stay in the Rugby World Cup.

27 days ago Scotland fell to defeat against defending champions South Africa and they soon trailed Ireland after a score in the opening minute left them facing an even steeper mountain to climb.

It's hard to understate just how massive this game was for Scotland. Arguably the biggest game of the Gregor Townsend era and it was soon a walkover against them as Ireland raced into a 26-0 time lead, securing a bonus point before the whistle had been peeped by the referee for the interval.

Back-to-back Pool B wins over Tonga and Romania built some momentum in the squad and there was an undoubted buzz around this game despite the hoops they would have to jump through to progress from the Pool. Unfortunately, they could only muster two second-half tries in quick succession to restore a little pride if nothing else.

They crash out of the Rugby World Cup yet again, albeit against an Ireland side that may never have a better chance to go on and win it. For Scotland, it will be time to reassess and watch the rest of it on the couch despite a valiant second-half fightback.

Full-time: Ireland 36-14 Scotland

After Ireland's score in the first minute, it seemed inevitable that Scotland would fall to a glorious defeat.

Townsend's side showed great spirit but Ireland soon overwhelmed them and scored a flurry of tries, securing the bound point prior to the interval.

Some signs of a Scotland fightback soon came to fruition as two tries in quick succession restored a bit of pride but there's no solace in that as they crash out of the Rugby World Cup.

Scotland still pushing

Another shot at hitting the 50:22 from Russell but Hugo Keenan shows great awareness to jog back, catch, and call the mark.

Those two tries restored some pride but Ireland look determined to keep it at just the two Scotland tries.

Russell optimistic as ever

Finn Russell sends a penalty right into the Ireland 22 but a third try in quick succession does not follow for Scotland.

Some pretty rapid rugby is still being played despite the score and the time on the clock.

Some perspective...

Ireland have utilised all of their bench now and are playing with a backline they probably never thought would play together, not in this game anyway.

You're never going to turn down points of the board for Scotland but it's not a grand comeback in all honesty.

Good to put up some scores though and not have it read 'Scotland 0', aye.

Russell takes quickly an converts again.

Too little, too late still.

Huw Jones gets into one-on-one space with Bundee Aki and it eventually makes its way to Price to sprint over.

Very much just a consolation, though.

No conversion though for Crowley after his lovely kick over for Ringrose.

Smacks off of the upright.

Ireland 36-0 Scotland

Oh wow. That's how you score a try.

Jack Crowley dinks a kick out to the left from right in the middle of the pitch, about 15 yards from the try line.

It falls on a sixpence for Garry Ringrose to stride in over the line with as he catches it.

Party time for Irish fans

Ireland fans in the ground know this is a damp squib now as far as any challenge from Scotland is concerned so they've decided to provide their own entertainment.

A Mexican wave makes its way around the stands for the umpteenth time since the interval.

Scotland continue to push

A little bit of encouragement now as they manage to hold onto the ball for as long as they've managed since around the 15th minute.

Finn Russell is at the heart of it as he dives towards the line, but not over it.

However, it's a familiar tale for Townsend's side as they are ultimately penalised in Ireland's 22.

No conversion from Sexton this time, though.

That's his last act of this game too as he's replaced by Jack Crowley.

Ireland 31-0 Scotland

An absolute doing. Ireland are going for the jugular as they enter Scotland's 22 with a looping left-looking pass.

Again, Scotland are all over the shop as it's worked out to Sheehan who has plenty of time to take it in and dive over the line.

It's all kicking off now

Just about everyone on the pitch is involved in a bit of argy bargy.

Pierre Schoeman tumbles over some advertising boards holding on to his Irish counterpart Dan Sheehan.

It ends in a yellow card for Ollie Smith for seemingly starting it all off.

Second half time

Can Scotland muster up any sort of response?

  • Share

All hope is not lost...

...just most of it.

47 unanswered second-half points from Scotland in the second half and we'll progress alongside Ireland.

Easy peasy.

Half time: Ireland 26-0 Scotland

Scotland will just be glad to not see Ireland running at their 22 for a bit in all honesty.

The early score wasn't ideal but they recovered well and continued to threaten until Ireland decided to get it over with.

A bonus point try was scored before the interval which sums it all up. Hard to convey just how far off Ireland's pace they've been, particularly in a game with so much at stake.

It's veering into watching through your fingers territory.

Again, Sexton, obviously.

This is not what we wanted to happen.

  • Share

Ireland 24-0 Scotland

Wow. Scotland are being totally outplayed now.

Dismantled in the first half as Ireland grab the bonus point for their efforts now too as Keenan dives in for his second.

A lovely Sexton pass found him in the build up.

Johnny Sexton again with the conversion.

  • Share

Ireland 17-0 Scotland

Well, it already seemed the case, but that is that sadly for Scotland as Iain Henderson takes it over.

If the opening two tries were swift this was the opposite. Raw power and brute force.

From close range it's driven over.

And he does, right over the middle with his conversion

Ireland 10-0 Scotland

Exceptional rugby.

In the blink of an eye, the speed of the game is cranked up to 11 by Ireland and they fly forward with precision and intent.

Hugo Keenan ultimately carries it over the line after a spectacular wrap around from their line out.

Russell does what Russell does

Darcy Graham can't make a catch as he's put under pressure yet again underneath a high kick, resulting in an Ireland lineout.

He's been targeted a few times in that sort of situation.

Scotland win it back and Finn Russell's eyes light up as he spots a potential gap for a 50:22.

He doesn't quite manage but it's his side's first meaningful turnover of the night. A nod of approval follows for Townsend and Co.

Ritchie hobbles off

And now captain Jamie Ritchie is trudging off clutching his abdomen.

He looks despondent as he sits down pitchside.

Some start for Scotland.

Ireland looming

Jeez, that was close again.

Sexton delays a pass to Mack Hansen right at the line and it just evades his fingertips and flips over the line.

Almost an Ireland score.
