As the wintery weather approaches in the UK, drivers may have begun to notice ice and fog on their windscreens in the morning or late at night.

This is a common yet annoying occurrence during the colder months, as it can often be rather time-consuming to make sure the glass is clear enough to see out of.

Drivers have the responsibility to take to the roads with an unobstructed view, so it's vital that you clear the windscreen before setting off. And according to experts, one simple 80p vegetable could do the trick.

Experts from car GAP Insurance providers ALA Insurance have shared a surprising tip that involves a common household item that you can buy at most supermarkets.

Cucumbers are known for their numerous health benefits, but it turns out you can also use them to save time when defrosting your car in the morning, Wales Online reports.

According to Callum Butler at ALA Insurance, cucumber is a natural moisture repellent for your windscreen - and can cost less than £1. You can pick one up for as little as 80p from Asda and Sainsburys.

Callum explained: "Cucumber contains natural oils which create a hydrophobic surface when rubbed on glass or mirrors. The water-repellent properties of cucumber help to stop your windshield from condensing and forming a fog.

"Essentially, it’s like giving your windshield a protective film that discourages condensation during the colder months".

The experts have also issued a step-by-step guide on how to de-mist your car with a cucumber.

To start with, put on your car's defrost setting, directing the air towards the windscreen. This'll help to dry the glass at first, but will cool down and condense again shortly after.

Then, turn on the aircon to remove the moisture from inside the car. If possible, try to avoid recirculating it, as this can make the inside of the car more humid.

A clean windshield is more likely to repel fogging and while using cloths to wipe foggy glass can leave streak marks, using a micro fibre cloth on dry windows will keep them cleaner. Finally, cut the end off a cucumber and wipe a light layer over your windshield to reduce fog for your cold mornings.
