A Cambuslang supermarket worker is appealing to kind-hearted locals to donate gifts for vulnerable kids in her Christmas appeal.

Nicola O’Brien has been running her Annual Christmas Gift Appeal in Cambuslang Morrisons for six years, donating hundreds upon hundreds of presents to those nearby school kids who may go without that festive season.

The 41-year-old contacts each of the local schools to get a list of what those children want for Christmas, she then compiles this into tags, which note their age, gender and what they would like on the shop’s Christmas tree, so generous customers can fulfil their wish.

Each child receives two gifts each through the appeal before the school Christmas holidays and it is beginning this month.

Nicola said: “When I started this, I could never have imagined how successful it would be. It’s always really massive and all of the customers go big and beyond and it’s getting bigger every year.

The selfless supermarket worker is looking to help locals this Christmas

“I like to do it because it all stays local. If everyone did something like this in their own local area, it would make more of a difference.

“I have one woman who messages me every October to keep by 35 tags so people in her work can buy gifts for a kid instead of doing secret Santa.

“We usually get around 400 to 500 gifts. The idea is to give two gifts to each child, but we always end up with more than that. Last year, I gave tons to West Whitlawburn Youth Club to distribute to families.”

The Morrisons worker has also set up a trolley in the store to collect selection boxes, which will be distributed by the Fire Service following their Santa Dash this December.

To donate to the gift appeal, choose a tag from the tree, purchase the gift and tape the tag to it before giving it to the store.
