The Daily Record has put together 17 photos that show what life in Scotland was like during the 1940s — a decade in which the devastation and aftermath of World War Two gripped the country.

The 1940s in Scotland were defined by the Second World War

If there is one thing that defined Scotland — and most of the globe — in the 1940s, it is the Second World War.

While many of us learn about World War Two at school, reading about it simply can't come close to seeing real-life photographs from back then, which in turn could never compare to living through it.

The Daily Record has decided to turn back the clock to the 1940s to show what life in Scotland was really like when the nation was gripped by war, by putting together photographs shot back then from across the country.

We have also collected images taken in the second half of the decade, when the country was struggling to rebuild after the devastation caused.
